Øvre Leirfoss power plant is located on the Nid River in Trondheim Municipality in Trøndelag County.

  • 1901
    Entered into operation
  • 3 MW
    Installed capacity
  • 26.9 GWh
    Annual production

The power plant was commissioned on 4 November 1901. Development of this power plant was crucial for the introduction of electric trams in the city of Trondheim.

The run-of-river power plant uses a height of fall of 34 metres, and has a horizontal Francis turbine from 2014. Øvre Leirfoss was converted to a small-scale power plant when the new Leirfossene power plant was commissioned in 2008 and took over much of the service water from the two older power plants Øvre Leirfoss and Nedre Leirfoss.

The old generating units from 1919 and 1949 have not yet been dismantled but are no longer in operation.
